Visas/Travel Documentation/Passports

As the U.S. does, other countries require visas or other documentation for people entering the country for work, study or research. Research or work in a foreign country should not be done on a tourist visa only.

Contact the foreign embassy office in the U.S. for required visa documentation. The U.S. State Department has information on visa requirements by country, the locations of foreign embassy offices and other important information online.

Additionally, each U.S. traveler must have a passport to travel outside the country. The UC Merced Office of International Affairs Travel Tools website provides information on obtaining or renewing a U.S. passport, or you can go to the U.S. State Department Passport site.

Note: The U.S. restricts travel by its citizens to certain countries, including Cuba, has sanctions against others, including Iran and Cuba, and has trade embargoes against countries that are violating U.S. foreign policy. It’s important that researchers understand what countries have travel restrictions, and what countries have trade restrictions with the U.S. These embargoes are administered and enforced by the US Office of Foreign Assets Control

Please contact Associate Vice Chancellor for Research Deborah Motton at dmotton@ucmerced.edu or 209-345-4063 with questions or if you plan to travel to Cuba on university business.
