As with research involving human or subjects at UC Merced, all U.S. regulations apply to UC Merced personnel who perform research with human or animal subjects in foreign countries.
All human-subject research overseas performed by UC Merced researchers or sponsored by UC Merced must go through the Institutional Review Board (IRB) for review and approval before initiation.
This holds true for all animals-subject research as well, as these protocols must go through Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) review and approval before initiation.

Destination countries and collaborating institutions might also have ethics-review requirements for the use of human and animals in research in their countries.
The IRB and/or the IACUC at UC Merced might require researchers to gain permission/approval from the foreign country in some form before approval is granted by UC Merced. It is each investigator's responsibility to obtain those permissions.
